Walking - Sandwood
Bay
From the mountains now down to the sea and one of the best
walks in Scotland. North-west of Kinlochbervie (about 40
minutes from The Overscaig) there is a small road heading
north to Sandwood Bay – named by the Vikings, this
remote and beautiful beach will haunt you for a long time
after you return home.
The beach itself is about a mile long with moor land and
loch at its back behind marram-grass and sand dunes and
is flanked by cliffs and stacks. As a site where many ships
will have been wrecked over the centuries before the light-house
at Cape Wrath was built, it is no surprise that stories
of spirits abound here and there are many tales of mermaids
and a black-bearded sailor who haunts the shores.
