Fishing for the Wild Brown Trout of Sutherland
People come from all over the world to fish Highland lochs for their wild Brown Trout. Our local lochs produce excellent wild trout, and the occasional salmon, although these are rare. Loch Shin and Loch Merkland also have a population of Artic Char that can be caught on the fly occasionally.
The Overscaig House Hotel has gained an excellent reputation over many years as a traditional Sutherland fisherman's haven with fishing rights on Loch Shin, Loch Ghriama and Loch Merkland all within a short distance from the hotel. With 6 boats available there are plenty of good drifts where you could find that record breaking trout and many believe that the British record will be broken by a trout from Loch Shin.
The fishing records here go back to the 1870's and Lochs Shin, Ghriama and Merkland have consistently given fishermen a "good bag" for their efforts. Most see fish about ¾ - 1lb with many catching fish between 2 -4 lbs. Our recent fishing records can be downloaded using the link at the side.
Give us a call in advance to book a boat and if you need a ghillie for the day we can arrange that for you. Also, we can arrange salmon fishing on some of the local lochs and rivers with enough notice - the beats get booked early!

LIFE JACKETS AND LOCH SAFETY
There have been some awful tragedies over the years where fishermen have drowned. Four anglers died on Loch Awe recently and the coroner noted that all could have lived but none were wearing a life jacket! We issue life jackets to those using our boats and all we ask is that you wear it. Please have a look at the Loch Awe web-site where safety information is available and also reduced cost life jackets. Click the following link: www.lapb.org.uk
